Did you hear about Jamie Oliver’s FOOD REVOLUTION DAY? We are proud to be participating with our Ala Moana Farmers’ Market, this Saturday! Be sure to come by and learn about making fresh mozzarella from Jeanne Vana of North Shore Farms, and meet the genius behind Hawaii’s only bean-to-bar chocolate as you learn to make it yourself from Madre Chocolate!

All Three Markets OPEN This Weekend! Yay!

Trio Logo

 Farmers’ Market News
April 12, 2012 – Vol. 4 Issue 14

Aloha Market Friend!

What a wacky week. We are please to tell you that all three markets will be up and running this weekend! We hope to see you in town and/or country to celebrate our farmers and support the local economy. Every time you choose to purchase locally grown produce you are making a statement in support of local agriculture. We like that! Let’s all make statements this weekend!

WHEN IS A ROAD, NOT A ROAD?

Monday, we received word that the State of Hawaii Department of Transportation issued our Hale’iwa Farmers’ Market an order to vacate, within five days. It seems  that the little strip of asphalt that was once the Kamehameha Highway and has been sitting fallow since the opening of the Joseph P Leong Bypass in 1993, is still technically a ‘road, ‘ and thereby fell under Section 264-101 of the Hawaii Revised Statutes: “Vending from highways is prohibited.”

Luckily, today we were able to sit down with the Department of Transportation. Everyone agreed that it would be a travesty to close the market on such short notice. The farmers have grown crops to sell at the market, and the community expects to feed that produce to their families. By this afternoon, we received a call from our attorneys that the DOT is allowing us to continue operations through the end of the month. We hope that all the powers that be will come up with a solution that will allow us to continue operations until we can find a new suitable home in Hale’iwa.

Please continue to spread the word of our Petition to Save Haleiwa Farmers’ Market. Your signatures and comments (64 pages of them!) have been delivered to the DOT. How many more pages shall we add to that?? This extension is just a reprieve… we have a long way to go and need your support to make it happen. And please join our FaceBook page to keep current on this issue. Mahalo!

Below you will find a link to Ben Gutierrez’ piece for Hawaii News Now, which gives a good overview of the issues we have been faced with this week. Thanks, Ben!

We will see you this weekend at Ala Moana Farmers’ Market (Saturday 8-12), Hawaii Kai Farmers’ Market (Saturday 9-1)  and Haleiwa Farmers’ Market (Sunday 9-1)!

HAWAII NEWS NOW

By Ben Gutierrez - bio | email

HALEIWA (HawaiiNewsNow) – A popular outdoor Sunday event on Oahu’s North Shore is in jeopardy after the state issued a notice to vacate to the operators and owners of the Haleiwa Farmers’ Market.

The market has been an icon in the community since it started back in 2009. Recently, the issue of where the market operates has drawn some controversy.

The Department of Transportation says the 2.5 acres of land at the intersection of Kamehameha Highway and J.P. Leong Highway is technically a highway right of way, and is zoned for agricultural use, not for doing business.

Real Food, Hog Genocide & Excitotoxins

Farmers’ Market News
March 29, 2012 – Vol. 4 Issue 12

Aloha Market Friend!

Well, Spring is in the air… and in my market basket! What is your favorite market find these days? I am enjoying Onda Pasta’s handmade Tri-Color Pasta made with North Shore Farms Beets and Mohala Farms Kale; big happy Ma’O Sassy salads with Ho Farms grape tomatoes; Lymey’s Smoked Marlin; Tin Roof Ranch pasture-raised eggs; and raw desserts from Rawfello. Of course the abundance of tropical fruit also makes my week juicy and delicious… mangoes, pineapple, papayas, apple bananas, mangosteen, rambutan! With so much to choose from, I need a bigger cooler to get everything home!

There is NO HAWAII KAI Farmers’ Market this Saturday, to make room for Kaiser High’s big Spring Fest. So head over to Ala Moana FM bright and early, then head over the Spring Fest to help with fundraising efforts for the school!

We will see you this weekend at Ala Moana Farmers’ Market (Saturday 8-12)  and Haleiwa Farmers’ Market (Sunday 9-1)!

Let There Be Cheese!

Farmers’ Market News

Aloha Market Friend!

We are thrilled that Naked Cow Dairy has met their goal, and that Hawaii will have lots of LOCAL CHEESE! The money they collected will provide them with enough funds to equip their kitchen with a heating element for their 230-gallon cheese vat & low-temp pasteurizer. In addition they will need to build and outfit a cheese aging room to keep the delicious cheeses at the right temperature and humidity until they come to market. Did you know this will be Hawaii’s FIRST Cow Cheese operation? It’s about time!

We will see you this weekend at Ala Moana Farmers’ Market (Saturday 8-12), Hawaii Kai Farmers’ Market (Saturday 9-1) and Haleiwa Farmers’ Market (Sunday 9-1)!

Are You Ready For the Weekend Markets?

Trio Logo

 Farmers’ Market News
March 9, 2012 – Vol. 4 Issue 9

Aloha Market Friend!

Wow… we have had a lot of rain this week! And when you eat locally that effects what goes on your table. Too much rain? Not enough rain? Farming is a delicate balance. The growers are always hedging their bets this way or that trying to make certain the fields are producing something no matter what the season (in Hawaii i guess that means rainy or sunny.) So we will see you on the weekend, when we are promised warmer temps and drier skies! And thank you for your loyalty to the growers!

We will see you this weekend at Ala Moana Farmers’ Market (Saturday 8-12), Hawaii Kai Farmers’ Market (Saturday 9-1) and Haleiwa Farmers’ Market (Sunday 9-1)!
